Wormwood has a long history of use in herbal medicine and is best known as the key flavouring in absinthe and vermouth. The dried aerial parts—stems, leaves, and young flowers—contain potent compounds such as thujone, absinthin, and anabsinthin, traditionally used to support digestion, liver function, and appetite stimulation. In higher concentrations, wormwood has been employed as a vermifuge (to expel intestinal parasites) and a mild sedative.
