Pansies are beloved for their charming "faces" and vibrant range of colours, making them a favourite in flower beds, containers, and borders. These hardy annuals bloom profusely from early spring through to the first frost, brightening up the garden even on cooler days. Flowers and young leaves are edible, offering a mild, slightly grassy flavour that’s perfect for garnishing salads, desserts, and drinks.

Start seeds indoors in early spring and transplant once the soil has warmed, or direct sow after frost. Pansies are easy to care for, thrive in partial to full sun, and will continue blooming all season long if kept regularly deadheaded.

Where Can You Grow Pansy?
Well-suited to Zones 3–9, pansies perform best in well-drained, rich soil with consistent moisture. Ideal for containers, hanging baskets, edging, and mass plantings.

History and Historical Uses
Pansies have been cultivated since the early 19th century, originally developed from wild violets and violas. In the Victorian era, pansies were symbolic of remembrance and romantic affection. Today, they continue to be valued for their long bloom time, edible flowers, and ease of growth.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8–9: Direct sow or transplant in early spring or autumn for cool-season blooms.
Zones 5–7: Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, transplant out once soil is workable.
Zones 3–4: Grow as an early spring annual or use cold frames for overwintering starts.

How to Grow and Harvest Pansy

Planting: Sow seeds 3mm (⅛in) deep indoors or direct; transplant 15–20cm (6–8in) apart.
Watering: Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.
Harvesting: Pick flowers as needed for garnish or display; harvest leaves when young and tender.
Maintenance: Remove faded blooms to extend flowering; mulch to retain soil moisture.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Allow to Set Seed: Let some flowers mature and form seed pods.
Harvest Seeds: Collect when pods are brown and dry.
Dry and Store: Ensure seeds are thoroughly dry; store in a cool, dry place.
Viability: Seeds remain viable for 2–3 years when stored properly.
